The All-New Media launch and chipsets by Helio
Taiwan’s fabless chipmaker Media Tek Thursday launched two new Helio G System-on-Chipsets (SoC)–the Helio G96 and the Helio G88 which completely focuses on enhancing the display and photography capabilities of smartphones. The Media Tek Helio G96 SoC supports 120Hz displays with up to Full-HD resolution. It has an octa-core CPU with two Arm Cortex-A76 up to 2.05GHz, with support for LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 storage.
It has no limitation in Display Driver IC (DDIC) supply, C-PHY, or D-PHY interface, and supports both LCD and AMOLED display. it supports up to 108MP cameras. This is combined with fast Cat-13 4G LTE World Mode modem integration, dual 4G SIM and Volte and ViLTE services, as well as its Intelligent Resource Management Engine and Networking Engine.

On the other hand, the Media Tek Helio G96 SoC supports 90Hz displays and has an Octa-core CPU featuring two Arm Cortex-A75 CPUs operating at up to 2.0GHz. The Helio G88 can support up to 64MP main cameras combined with enhancements like a hardware depth engine for dual-camera bokeh captures, a Camera Control Unit (CCU), and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) technologies. These new Helio G series chips are at the core of incredible mobile experiences,’ said CH Chen, Deputy General Manager of Wireless Communication Products at MediaTek’s Wireless Business Group.
The fourth-largest global chipmaker also offers 5G chipsets for flagship smartphones such as the Density 1000, 1100, and 1200 series while the Density 700, 800, and 900 series cater to the broader market segment.
What are Media Tek Processors?
MediaTek Inc. is a semiconductor company from Taiwan and it is one of the largest smartphone chip makers in the world. MediaTek designs SOCs based on the ARM’s architecture and these chips can be seen in devices from brands like Lenovo, Moto, Nokia, Xiaomi, Oppo, ZTE, Vivo, etc.

Creation and Development
Media Tek was originally a unit of the Taiwanese firm, United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), tasked with designing chipsets for home entertainment products. On May 28, 1997, the unit was spun off and incorporated. Media Tek Inc. was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSEC) under the “2454” code on July 23, 2001. The company started out designing chipsets for optical drives and subsequently expanded into chips for DVD players, digital TVs, mobile phones, smartphones and tablets. In general, MediaTek has had a strong record of gaining market share and displacing competitors after entering new markets.
The company launched a division to design products for mobile devices in 2004. Seven years later, it was taking orders for more than 500 million mobile system-on-chip units per annum, which included products for both feature phones and smart devices. By providing extensive system engineering assistance the company allowed many smaller companies and new entrants to enter a mobile phone market that had previously been dominated by large, often vertically integrated corporations that had long been broadly entrenched in the telecommunications industry.
The mobile chip market quickly became the main growth driver for the company. At Mobile World Congress 2014, Media Tek unveiled its new brand “Everyday Genius”, dubbing the term “Super-mid-market”, with the vision and aiming to make smartphones more accessible affordable to the wider market.

The Fastest Media Tek Processor Ever
Though MediaTek chips have been criticized a lot in the past by reviewers, their performance has improved significantly in recent years. Many mid-range & budget SOCs such as Helio P60 and Helio P22, offer better value for money than any of their competitors. In late 2019, MediaTek launched their Dimensity Series that is extremely powerful and can give good competition to high-end Snapdragon & Exynos chips.
To rank the processors, we use a special method that judges the performance of a chip on the basis of both the raw benchmarks as well as real-world parameters such as User Experience. By giving importance to both these factors, we calculate the Centurion Mark and rank the processors according to their scores. You can also find the ranking here.
- A processor with a score higher than 110 delivers excellent performance in Gaming as well as Heavy usage. – above 125
- A score between 85 and 110 will result in a great performance in general use as well as gaming. – above -100-125
- In this range, the performance of SOCs is above average. But you’re unlikely to observe any lags or any other significant issues. – 70-100
- The general performance of these chips is below average but it is acceptable in the lower end phones. – 55 – 70
- The performance of these chips is below par and should be avoided unless you’re buying an extremely cheap phone with a budget lower than $100. – below – 55.
